The “human washing machine” that captivated Expo 2025 Osaka is going international.
A resort company in Georgia, USA has purchased five units — the machine’s first-ever export, shipping in stages from spring 2026.
That is according to Japanese media reports (The Yomiuri Shimbun).
Destination
a large resort being built in Georgia, USA — five units in total
Shipment
in stages, starting spring 2026
The backstory
a one-off Expo demo built for about ¥100 million, with no plan to sell it — the maker decided to sell after talks with the importer and because so many Expo visitors could not get a slot (1,227 bathers; 98.3% of the 847 who answered the survey said they were satisfied)
Price reference
¥60 million (≈ US$385,000) per unit in Japan; the export price has not been disclosed
A US company with a resort in Georgia bought five units. The maker had never planned to sell it at all.
“We never even imagined going overseas”
From a one-off Expo exhibit to an export product
Science Co. spent about ¥100 million (roughly US$640,000) on a single demonstration pod for Expo 2025.
There was no plan to sell it.
The US company’s procurement representative in Japan came to inspect it the day after the Expo opened.
The queues of visitors who could not get a slot did the rest.
The maker, Osaka-based Science Co., never planned any of this.
The company spent about ¥100 million building a single demonstration unit for the Expo. It had no intention of commercializing it.
Then came the queues: 1,227 bathers, and a 98.3% satisfaction rate among the 847 who answered the survey.
There were far more applicants than seats.
The day after opening day, representatives of the future US importer visited the Expo.
They watched visitors relax inside the pod, and started negotiations.
Within two years, a one-off exhibition piece had become an export product.
